Native to Florida and the West Indies, palms are extensively planted for their rapid growth and adaptability. Raised in the tropical climate of Venezuela, lugufelo often draws inspiration from its lush vegetation, exemplified by his sculpture, Majestic Palm. Palms have historically symbolized victory, peace, and fertility across cultures. The statue’s upward shape evokes strength and power, while its double leaf construction suggests peace and serenity, bridging distinct cultures and reflecting lugufelo’s experience of finding common ground in the USA. For many North Americans, palms symbolize warm, tropical beaches, embodying peace and calm amid a hectic world.

Winner of the People’s Choice Award in Castle Rock, CO, the Eye exhibits my ability to create suspension art on a large scale. The upper metal piece is completely suspended from the base, while the pupil hangs delicately in a balance with the rest of the art. This is important because while the art is strategically balanced, it is structurally prepared to withstand hurricane-force wind.

The cocoon is a powerful symbol that speaks to many different layers. The cocoon is about wanting to feel supported and safe…it’s about withdrawing from harshness, putting up walls around your tender heart, hoping it will keep you safe. The cocoon goes in conjunction with the Patchwork Butterfly sculpture; the cocoon represents the birth of the butterfly and that special moment when it takes off to the best of her life. It’s also about transformation – the caterpillar, when it weaves those silken threads around itself, literally breaks apart, becoming a pulpy, mushy soup. And slowly, a beautiful butterfly emerges from that soup that was once a caterpillar. This piece has two colors, yellow on one side to represent the sunrise and orange on the other to denote the sunset.
